Creative Writing and Storytelling Programs with Melbourne Young Writers’ Studio

Our School Holiday programs are both fun and educational, what’s more, every day is different! As with all of our programs writing and creating stories remains the focus, but, school holiday programs provide young writers with a broad range of activities and prompts all based around a unique theme for that particular day. At any given Melbourne Young Writers’ Studio holiday program a young writer can expect games, crafts, character building, team activities and of course, bucket loads of fun!

Our school holiday programs are ideally suited to young writers aged 7 – 12 years (unless stated otherwise), however all school aged young writers are welcome as long as they can write full sentences without assistance.
All school holiday programs (unless otherwise stated) start at 9am and run until 3pm.
Parents and carers are invited to arrive for pickup at 2.50pm if they would like to hear some of what has been written. We usually do a little reading at the end of each day.
All young writers must bring their own lunches and snacks for the day. We provide water, and on hot days we provide icy poles in the afternoon. Lunch usually happens between 12pm – 1pm.
We have a nut free policy and do not allow young writers to share food.
A parent, guardian, or carer must sign each young writer in and out.

Monday 30th March

Clue-Doh!

Was it Professor Plumb with a candlestick in the ballroom? Or perhaps Miss Scarlett with the lead pipe in the Library? We know there was a crime, but who was the culprit? In this mysterious school holiday program we’ll be asking young writers to put on their detective caps to unravel a Cluedo inspired mystery. The discoveries made along the way will inform the devising of original stories with all the drama, intrigue and suspense of an Agatha Christie novel. This holiday program will be full of clues, red herrings and big reveals to keep young writers guessing until the very end.

Wednesday 1st April

Writer-Trap!

Cause and effect – it’s the invisible force that dictates every character’s journey. Inspired by the game Mousetrap we’ll be building out very own Rube Goldberg machines in our writers’ studio. These machines are made from anything and everything – books, dominos, ping pong balls, string – still confused, then check out the video below, all you need to know is that this day is going to be heaps of fun and we’ll be taking a deep dive into cause and effect in a character’s journey.

Monday 6th April

Dungeon Crawl

Delve deep into the Young Writers’ Dungeon and embark on a grand tabletop adventure! Step into the perilous boots of an adventurer and experience the award-winning Dungeon World, an easy to learn and beginner-friendly game inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, where we will create classic fantasy characters, face bandits, goblins, and dragons and scribe our epic tales that are sure to pass into legend! So, grab a fistful of dice, put on a silly voice and join us for this immersive school holiday program, where you, your actions, and the dice will shape an epic fantasy story.

Wednesday 8th April

Welcome to the Jungle!

Snapping crocodiles, mischievous chimps, and thundering stampedes – welcome to the jungle, here anything and everything can and will happen. Inspired by the legend that is Jumanji this holiday program will be an interactive and immersive journey into the wilds of storytelling, where young writers will be presented with surprise foes and obstacles from deep within a cursed magical board game. You can run, you can try to hide, but the only way out is to write your way out, before the game is over.

At Melbourne Young Writers’ Studio we run innovative and fun filled creative writing courses and workshops for children and adults.

Based in our beautiful writing studio in Fitzroy North, our kids programs are aimed at equipping and inspiring young writers with the skills they need to get writing and to develop their storytelling craft. Our creative writing courses are a journey into story, an insight into character and an exploration of ideas and creativity.

For adults we run a range of creative writing courses and programs for emerging writers looking to hone their storytelling craft, as well as for those wanting to expand their storytelling skills and connect with a creative community of other writers and storytellers.
