Week One:

Down the Rabbit Hole

DATES & TIMES

Follow Alice down the rabbit hole as you explore the wonders of art making at NAS these holidays. Uncover the mysteries behind tonal drawing, dive into the curious world of printmaking and finish off the week with ceramics at the Mad Hatter’s tea party. Develop skills in process and harness your imagination as you journey through your own wonderland.

Program includes:

  • Tonal Drawing for Teens
    • Explore representational and atmospheric possibilities of tonal drawing. Using still life set ups and a variety of lighting techniques, you will learn to illustrate light and dark tones in your drawings to capture your subject.
  • Curiouser and Curiouser Relief Printing
    • Explore the possibilities of relief print techniques in new and exciting ways. Using a combination of techniques, create your own visual language to explore a topic close to your heart. Work with our amazing Albion presses and create your own limited edition images that explore the power of graphic design.
  • Mad Hatter’s Tea Party
    • Make your own whimsical cups and pots in this hand building workshop. Use hand building techniques including pinch, slab and coil to bring your creations to life and add a splash of colour with slips and underglazes to finish your pieces. The objects will be fired for collection at a later date.

Week One:

Print, Paint and Play

Explore creativity and technique these holidays at NAS! Create your own graphic design with heatpress printmaking, learn how to harness your own expressive style in painting and drawing and give textiles a new life as soft sculpture.

Program includes:

  • Heatpress Printing
    • Explore colour, line and shape to create unique and personalised designs in this printmaking class. Create your own graphic designs to transfer onto fabrics. Work with text, line and shape to make an eye-catching design. Your artwork will be printed onto a bag and you can even bring along a light coloured cotton t-shirt to make your own graphic tee!
  • Expressive Drawing and Painting
    • Discover the power of expressive drawing and painting techniques to illustrate emotion, gesture and more. Increase your knowledge and understanding of the importance of medium, composition and form. Working in a variety of drawing and painting methods you will explore layering and composition to find your own style of seeing the world.
  • Sculptural Textiles
    • Explore and play with how material can be manipulated to make amazing soft sculptures. Will they be hanging or hold their own shape? Are they wearable or stand alone? Learn how to stitch, glue and build forms that have their own personality.

Week Two:

Harness Your Imagination

Do you have a story to tell? Or maybe a comic to bring to life? Join us these holidays to explore your ideas and harness your imagination at NAS. Develop your techniques in Etching, create story boards and harness your inner animator over a week of exciting opportunities to grow your creative potential.

Program includes:

  • Etching for Teens
    • In this two-day workshop you’ll explore the medium of etching with a variety of tools and techniques. Learn to work with acid, hard ground, drypoint, chine-collé and other techniques, and acquire the skills to transfer your printing plates onto paper using a printing press.
  • Clay Comics
    • Working with clay as your drawing board, create your own comic strip! Using the bisque fired surface and inspired by the rich history of ceramic storytelling, you’ll create your own unique composition limited only by your imagination. The objects will be fired for collection at a later date.
  • The Art of Animation for Teens
    • Bring your drawings to life in this animation workshop! Working in the NAS drawing and digital studios you’ll learn about stop-motion animation and storyboarding to create your own adventure short story. Play with composition, movement and more as your story comes to life as a moving image.

Week Two:

Land, Sea and Sky

Be inspired by the world around you these holidays as you take a journey through the art of the landscape. Capture architecture and the urban jungle in drawing, discover what hidden treasures await in printmaking and take a journey from the real to the abstract in painting.

Program includes:

  • Exploring the Urban Landscape
    • Calling all budding architects! Explore the world around you in this drawing workshop capturing buildings great and small. Using some great drawing tips and tricks, this workshop will show you how to capture quick sketches of the urban landscape. Be inspired by the grounds of the National Art School to as you work with a variety of drawing media to develop a series of artworks.
  • Monotypes and Found Objects
    • Layer your creations with visual textures and shapes as you explore the concepts of monotypes. Work with colour, line and shape in your compositions to communicate your own message. Be inspired by the world around you as you collect found objects to add shape to your prints.
  • Landscape to Abstraction for Teens
    • Capture the world around you on canvas in this painting workshop. Working with the imagery of a landscape, explore the shapes, colours and lines that create the world around you. Explore how to transform your work from realistic to abstract on the journey through composition.
